Expectations EXPERIENCE Prior farm experience with at least some management involved is strongly preferred. Qualified applicants will have managed greenhouses, have years of tractor experience, have extensive experience planting seeds and managing irrigation and fertility, and have experience managing staff. Highly qualified applicants will have prior Farm Manager or Grower experience. This experience will have led to knowledge of crop production and working as a part of a team. EDUCATION Applicants with education (formal and informal) in agriculture and other select areas will be given special consideration. abilities Must have the ability to be timely to scheduled shifts, ability to work as part of a team and take directions, ability to work at a constant pace for up to 10 hours a day, ability to tolerate weather extremes and do physical labor outdoors year-round, ability to lift 60 lbs and carry it 40 feet, ability to stay in a positive mind-set (even under duress). + Must be able to drive tractors and delivery trucks. + Must also be able to work in group settings, communicate clearly, be willing to constructively criticize others and take constructive criticism.
Position Description As part of the skilled and dynamic team running our diversified vegetable farm, your responsibility will be to manage the production of all crops. The Production Manger will spend much of their day out in the fields, but will also be required to complete duties in the office such as crop planning, seed orders and record keeping. This position will be involved in every aspect of the production of crops at the farm. duties will include (but are not limited to): + Coordinating with Harvest and Marketing Manager, Facilities Manager and Business Owners on all aspects of the farm, especially to aid in the regular, reliable and predictable production of crops requested by others. + Estimating, based on field observations and calendars, what produce is likely to be in inventory for the next week to month, and in what quantity + Managing a detailed and well planned crop schedule for year round production of fresh and storage crops + Participating in and directing staff in the timely completion of necessary tasks (hand weeding, irrigation, installing trellises, etc) + Maintaining a disciplined and well-paced work environment + Managing field fertility, including the taking of soil samples, deciphering results and acting upon data + Maintaining sanitary and organized work and storage areas + Safely and skillfully operating tractors and other equipment + Managing irrigation on the farm + Maintaining, in good operating condition, all equipment + Managing our Organic Certification with the Texas Department of Agriculture + Maintaining detailed field records, and spreadsheets to track production Farm Managers will work a flexible schedule depending on season and weather but will average around 45 hours a week. Many weeks managers will receive two consecutive days off. Weekend work and “on-call” status will regularly be required.
Location Specifics We're located in Richmond, Texas which is a suburb of Houston. Plenty to do and places to eat abound but this is a suburban environment. Just 35 minutes from Downtown Houston. Housing is not provided, but plenty is available nearby.
