The ideal candidate would be comfortable and patient working around large numbers >500 size flocks of poultry, herds of 2-35 pigs and other farm animals. Extremely reliable and on-time daily, hard-working in extreme environments, self-motivated, able to maintain a sense of humor during difficult days and communicate detail well. Reliable transportation required. Applicants should be reasonably fit and able to lift 25-50lbs many times per day. They should also be able to work outside in all weather conditions from rain to Texas heat to cold. We work every day no matter the weather. No smoking allowed. A valid driver’s license is required.
Employees are involved in ALL aspects of the farm from animal chores to field work to farm development projects. While working closely with the farmer(s) much of the time, s/he will also have many independent responsibilities. No two days are ever the same, expect changing priorities and daily animal emergencies.
Positions available for one or a combination of these times seven days a week based on time of year and available sunlight:
Mornings: 6:30 am to 9am
Weekends 6:30am to 9am and 4pm to dark
Part-time hours may be divided among employees, who will have a set schedule to work certain days at the times decided by Whitehurst Farms. Additional project-based work may be available on an as needed basis. The farm operates 7 days per week, rain or shine or inclement weather. The schedule may vary slightly with season and task at hand. Farm work is at the same time incredibly demanding and rewarding. Please consider this commitment before applying. The following is a list of some of the tasks an employee can expect to do:
• Animal care: feed and water up to 2 times daily. Monitoring animals for sickness, disease, injury; letting chickens out at sunrise, moving portable chicken pens, egg collection, moving portable fencing, putting egg laying chickens in at sun down, catching and crating chickens, turkeys for processing, housing and pen repair, brooder maintenance and clean out.
• Field work: Building, modifying or moving pens, moving and/or staging feed, feed bins and water troughs, equipment pick up and organization, setting traps for predators.
• Transport/pick up: running errands locally for supplies and feed;
Whitehurst Farms is located in Brenham, TX which is 50 miles west of Houston and 90 miles east of Austin, TX.

Whitehurst Farms raises on an ongoing basis 300-1000 chicks, 300-400 pastured meat chickens monthly, 800-1600 free range egg laying chickens, 100-250 free range turkeys, rabbits and 40-70 pastured pigs. We raise animals using daily or weekly rotational grazing, mobile housing and organic practices. We are starting produce in the fall of 2017. Animal welfare is our primary concern.
