Type of farm?
We are located in Oxford, NC (about 45 mins north of Raleigh/Durham) and have 100 acres of wood land and pasture. It is a quiet and safe area outside of the city where you can enjoy the fresh air and beautiful stars at night.
Email us directly if you are interested and we will send an application. Once received we will review it internally and setup a conference call. If that goes well, we will ask you to come for a few days up to a week for a trial and if we are all happy, then we will determine a start date for the apprenticeship.
Food will be provided for you to cook for yourself for breakfast and dinner. We will eat lunch together every day that you work. On our farm we have grass fed dairy cows, forest-fed pigs, egg laying chickens, guinea fowls, fruit orchards and small gardens. We will provide food from everything we grow on the farm. For items we do not have available on the farm such as breads, potatoes, certain veggies and certain fruits those will be purchased at your expense.
We expect that the candidate will be eager and interested in learning all aspects of the farming operation and that they work together with the farm owner to ensure the farm runs smoothly. Also, we expect that the candidate be ready and willing to start work each day at the agreed upon time and maintain a positive and respectful attitude as well as flexibility with changing schedules based on projects underway. We are very open and interested in feedback and ideas so feel free to share anything we can do to make the farm a better place to live, work, etc.
You will learn about rotational grazing practices of dairy cows, milking, rotating pigs and egg laying chickens, electrical fencing, marketing, sales, how to grow your business, land management practices, animal husbandry, how to build a food forest, permaculture on a large scale and more. Much of what we do mimics Joel Salatin's practices at Polyface Farms. This is an opportunity for you to see what it is like to start from the beginning with a new farm as we recently established this farm in April 2016 so you can learn all of the in's and out's of how to get a farm up and running and become profitable. We worked on a farm prior to this for 3 1/2 years so we took what we learned there and are putting it into practice. We want to be able to offer that same opportunity to others interested in farming.
This position will allow the eligible candidate to learn all aspects of the farm as outlined below:
1. Milk and rotate dairy cows
2. Feed, water and move forest fed pigs
3. Feed, water and move egg mobile with egg layers
4. Assist with farm projects (ex. fencing, water system, building new structures, etc.)
5. Act as back-up when Farm Owner is away from the farm
6. Learn order management process (prepping orders, invoicing, delivering orders, etc.)
7. Assist with agroforestry operations
8. Assist with gardening and small-scale veggie operation
8. Other projects/duties as they arise
7am-6pm (varies by day and project) six days a week with one day off
Nature's Roots Farm is a diversified family farm which produces beyond-organic, nutrient dense foods by centering its farming practices around holistic agroforestry, animal husbandry, and pasture management principles. The farm also serves as an educational outreach for individuals of all ages to be equipped with the knowledge and support to start small farms and create local food markets. We are looking for individuals to help us continue to grow the business and if it works out to start their own enterprise on our farm at the end of the apprentice program.
