We are 2.5 hours from Pittsburgh, & Erie PA. About 1.5 hours from State College PA. Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Pennsylvania you'll find our farm stretched out across our plateau. Our cows will greet you and the chickens will send you off with their notorious cackle!
Follow up email, questionnaire, request for resume, phone call interview and possible on farm check out.
Apprentices have access to our larder within reason. No fillet mignon sandwiches for lunch! Meals are provided. Some meals (all dinners) will be with the family, others will be done on your own with supplies given.
We borrowed this list from Polyface's expectations but they transfer to what we expect also:
Bright eyed, bushy-tailed, self-starter, eager-beaver, situationally aware, go-get-‘em, teachable, positive, non-complaining, grateful, rejoicing, get’er done, dependable, faithful, perseverant, take-responsibility, clean-cut, All-American Man appearance & character. We are very, very, very discriminatory.
Expectations: like any experience, you will get out of it what you put into it. We have attainable benchmarks, but they require effort and sweat. Physically, you will be in better shape than you ever thought possible. Emotionally, you will know what you did today, why it was important, and feel great about it.
The apprentices will learn all aspects of Farming while on Heritage Farm. From the ins and outs of pastured poultry, rotational grazing for both sheep and cattle, struggles and successes of Marketing, and how it all works together. From fence building, water maintenance, to castration we'll do it all and teach as we go! Apprentices also get the opportunity to learn the art of butchering from our team. This knowledge is an asset to anyone from the home chef to an aspiring farmer! We processs chickens weekly May-October, turkeys through the summer, lamb in the fall, pork throughout the year, and beef in the fall. All the apprentices are well versed in butchering by the time they are finished here.
