Education Potential After the first few weeks of work you’ll notice an established rhythm of duties and expectations. While this position offers hands-on training, we would also like you to self-educate and learn what you can about organic pastured poultry production on your own. We will provide books and training materials for you to achieve this objective. This is a five month paid apprenticeship (Jan-May, 2018.) If successful, we would consider continuing the partnership again next year. You'll have the potential to learn all aspects of starting and scaling a pasture-raised poultry operation.

Position Description Daily duties: we are looking for someone who can follow written standard operating procedures, as well as take verbal direction from the farm manager. Daily, you’ll be hand feeding chickens, cleaning stalls/refreshing bedding, and moving portable hen houses. You’ll also be maintaining poultry drinker lines, monitoring temperatures and livestock living conditions, and keeping meticulous notes. You’ll help sanitize stalls and prepare new areas for incoming baby animals. Twice a week you’ll be required to handle young chickens for on-farm transport according to strict humane guidelines. Since ours is a certified organic operation, you won’t be exposed to harsh chemicals found on many other farms. However, this also means the animals need extra care and attention to stay healthy and comfortable, so attention to detail is a must. We need someone who is comfortable operating heavy farm equipment. Mechanical knowledge (electrical and plumbing) is not necessary but is a huge PLUS. Weekly duties will include mowing, weed wacking, and regular grounds maintenance. Your main point of contact will be our farm manager, but you’ll also take direction from the farm’s owner.
Work Schedule 8 hours a day, 5 days a week
End Date 2018/05/30
Description Yohanan Farm is a family farm near Leesburg, Virginia. Inspired by Polyface Farm, we raise pastured poultry in the most sustainable way. Our farm does not use GMO's, pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, appetite stimulants or confinement houses. In fact, nothing separates our chickens from the pastures on which they thrive. Every day, the birds are moved to fresh pasture for unlimited foraging and play. Our chickens consume lush grass, insects, and a custom blend of probiotics and certified organic feed from a locally-sourced mill. In winter, we also allow them the option of warm, clean, safe housing with environmental enrichments.
